Home Automation/Smart Home ownership is a huge goddamn mess. A lot of the major smart tech players have come together to create this standard called Matter that aims to make all this wifi tech work together.
Personally, I just don’t see it happening. Sure there was a shitload of stuff at CES this year that works with Matter, or older stuff that can be updated to work with Matter. But some of this shit is ridiculous.
Look at this, the SmartThings Station.

It’s a new hub that I’d have to buy, and I thought Samsung already gave up on the hubs selling them off to aeotech. But here we have this new hub that doubles as a wireless charger, because why the fuck not?
There are a lot of competing platforms like Thread, ZigBee, and more. And goddamn, I don’t want it using WiFi because of wifi collision. That’s why Zwave was better, didn’t operate on the 2.4 ghz spectrum so my wifi devices wouldn’t be overloaded. But no, my lights have to be wifi so that’s why I get shitty network speeds upstairs because I have to be able to shout at my smart speaker to turn off the goddamn lights about 5 times before it actually works.
I would love for this to be the standard sure, but I am certain this will flop, but I’d be happy to be proven wrong.
